Fed: Aust ambassador warns US could split from Security Council
Australia's ambassador to the United Nations says America could split from the UN SecurityCouncil if the council fails to enforce its resolutions against Iraq.
Ambassador JOHN DAUTH says the United States won't turn its back on the UN any time soon.
Mr DAUTH says the US will instead join with Britain to introduce to the UN the textof a second resolution on Iraq.
He's told ABC television the US is committed to a second resolution before going towar against Iraq without UN backing -- but that stance won't last if the UN fails to act.
The US and Britain met strong opposition yesterday for plans to get UN endorsementto use military force against Iraq after arms inspectors gave an inconclusive report onBaghdad's cooperation.
An open debate is scheduled at the Council for Tuesday.
