NSW: Carr cannot guarantee water to farms

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR says the severity of the drought gripping the statemeans farmers can't be guaranteed water under a government assistance scheme.

The state's long-awaited drought assistance package will be officially launched today, with farmers who have spent six months in drought able to access state government watersubsidies.

However, Mr CARR has refused to guarantee that no family on a farm will run short of water.

He says it's it's very hard to make any guarantee about a drought this serious.

Only eight per cent of NSW is unaffected by drought.

Under the package, farmers who've been drought-affected for six months will be ableto access subsidies for the transport of water and feed to stock, the transport of stockto slaughter the transport of water for domestic purposes.

The cap on assistance has also been raised from $15,000 to $20,000 per farm plus upto $5,000 a year in subsidies for transport of domestic water.
